The dictionary definition of the word 'novel' explains it as a "fictitious prose narrative of considerable length and complexity, portraying characters and usually presenting a sequential organisation of action and scenes". Hmm. "Considerable length". Not what I'm writing at the moment, then.
There's another definition of it as an adjective that goes "of a new kind; different from anything seen or known before". Sort of what I'm writing, I hope.
In a weird sort of plot twist of real life, under the first definition of 'novel' as a noun is this:
"(formerly) novella". Which, as it happens, is what I'm apparently writing. I've learned to kind of accept that. I don't know why I was so opposed to this before. I suppose a novel just has more social standing in the world. When I hear the word novella, I just picture a little book that will maybe one day grow big enough to be called a novel. Like a kid who wants to go to big school and puts on his older brother's blazer that doesn't in anyway fit, though is still absolutely adorable.
What I'm trying to say here is that...
Actually, I have no idea. Scrap everything.
(Two days later)
I feel like scrapping everything. I FINALLY realised the REAL reason why my story is so minuscule. It's because way back when in the plotting stages, I decided to formulate it in the recipe for an epic, which meant focusing on certain characteristics. Unfortunately, I got too caught up on making it an epic that I failed to make it my own and as a result I'm stuck with this little thing in which the main character doesn't do much, but does experience all the things a hero does in an epic story. In other words, it sucks.
I'm torn between just finishing the damned thing, so I at least can cross it off my list, or just leaving it on chapter ten so I can look back in a few years and remind myself what an idiot I used to be. Thoughts and opinions are welcome - if not desired.
That's all material though isn't it?! What happens when you try to pack it out?
ReplyDeleteAlso, when you say scrap...do you mean...destroy?
Not destroy! Just...ignore. I don't know about packing it out, I don't think it would even work if I did. But I started planning something that leads on from it which also incorporates some of the ideas from the old one so...
ReplyDeleteSo then it could be a series of novella's maybe. Gosh, I mean, I really couldn't say without reading it myself - HUH?! WHO SAID THAT!....Weird.
ReplyDeleteAnywho, either way, it's always material to go back to :D
Okay, I think I might just finish it and THEN move on. Probably a good practice. Then if I think I can make it better in the future then at least it's complete. It's nearly finished anyway *trying to think positive*
